My life is a set of concentric interruptions.
Just when I am in the midst of something significant, where I am settling into the rhythm of things, something will pop up that takes my focus and attention away. I will park what I am doing and shift to the new urgency vowing to “get back to it soon!” only to be soon overtaken by a new urgency.
There are many life coaches who will tell me that I am too easily distracted and that I haven’t built enough effective habits to achieve my greatest self and fulfill my key personal life goals. Spiraling.
Meh!
Our lives are not our own. They are not “personal”. We are live through, in and because of, relationships that impact the character of our own persons.
A thing that helps anchor me (A floating sea anchor… not one of those “hooky” fixed bottom anchors) is music. I still listen to the songs I have grown with over my life. And the longer I live them more of them there are.
A song or tune will take us to some of our “origins” before life and love moved us on. It will remind and repair us.
That’s one of the reasons why the work of CMLA is significant. Giving ourselves, as a church, something that we can remember and take forward. A good song is portable and mutable and helps us locate ourselves in the moment. And it’s especially helpful when we do this in good company…
“Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow
Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here
It’ll be better than before
Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone”
